Mowing, fertilization, lawn irrigation and aeration

Lawn mowing is the most important care procedure. In the past, lawns were mowed regularly once or twice a week. This is no longer the case at present. In England, and on the mainland, the mowing time was adjusted to the growth of the grass. First, determine how high the grass is to be cut. In our climatic conditions, its height should be 3 cm. So the grass is mowed at a height 3 cm, when it has 4,5 cm. Means, that a third of the top grass is cut. The speed of grass growth varies throughout the year. The cutting times are adjusted to the rhythm of the growth. With a constant cut, the grass is forced to till, thanks to which it creates a dense and strong carpet, in which weeds have no chance of developing. The lawn is fertilized at the beginning of July and September with a fertilizer mixture in a dose 100 g/m².
In the absence of rainfall, artificial irrigation is necessary. He hydrates himself, when the soil is moderately dry, without waiting for it to dry thoroughly. It should be watered rarely, but abundantly, preferably in the evening, then there is less water loss due to evaporation. The working sprinkler is left in one place by 40 minutes.
When grass growth stops in October or November, the lawn is mowed for the last time in the year. Leaves are scooped up from the lawn surface and composted. Before the onset of winter, a thin layer of compost should be spread over the entire surface of the lawn.
In the first years, deep loosening or breaking the layer of turf is unnecessary. Only when mosses or weeds appear, such a procedure becomes necessary.
The turf is cut with special knives, which is conducive to the emergence of new roots. You can also break the turf as deep as possible with an iron rake, tearing out mosses and old grass. It is an excellent material for a compost heap. After such treatment, the lawn does not look very impressive, but after two weeks it will turn green, because the grass grows fast. Good to remember, that mosses develop most strongly in depressions and basins. All irregularities must be filled with compost soil and, if necessary, grassed over. Water impermeable places may appear on the lawn as a result of too strong compaction of the soil in its deeper layers. Then, special tools are used to pierce the turf and remove a part of the soil. Air and water enter its deeper layers through the openings, which removes the effects of excessive compression. The resulting holes can be filled with sand, which is especially recommended on heavy soils. This treatment is unnecessary on lighter soils.
Poor grass growth may be due to a lack of certain nutrients in the soil, especially phosphorus. Element deficiencies are most easily determined on the basis of soil analysis. Samples for chemical analysis are taken in late autumn, against soil freezing, and sends it to the laboratory.

Apart from powdered organic fertilizers, compost and biodynamic preparations should be used. The best evidence of good and healthy grass growth is its dark green color.

Lawn care tools
Half moon shovel. It is made of steel and should be well sharpened. It is used to cut the edges of the lawn, preparation of turf patches, leveling the surface of lawns, etc..
Rake. They are used to break the turf and rake up mosses or old grass.
Aeration fork for deep loosening of lawns. They are used primarily for loosening a strongly compact and impermeable layer of soil. Depth holes are made with these forks 6 cm. 48-60 holes should be made per square meter of lawn.
