Establishing a lawn
It is not a difficult task, however, it must be carefully executed. A lawn grows in one place for many years, so you need to prepare them well in advance. If the seeds are sown in the spring (in April), in the summer of the previous year, the selected area must be measured and properly prepared. A sandy loam soil is best, having a good structure and a pH of 6.5-7. If we add white clover seeds to the grass seed mixture, The soil pH should be higher (even to 7,5). It is best to buy a ready-made grass seed mixture at a garden store. Clover enriches the soil with nitrogen and improves its structure, and during flowering it attracts insects. For a nature lover, it is nicer to see a lawn varied with plants of other species than the monotonous monoculture of grasses. That is why lawns are found more and more often today, on which, apart from various species of grass, also clover grows.
In mid-September, the soil is digged in the area intended for the lawn to a depth of 15-20 cm and the stones and roots of weeds are removed.. Immediately after digging the soil, the soil is loosened with a manual conditioner and a rake. You can sprinkle bentonine flour in a dose on the surface of the soil 300 g/l m², then the soil should be carefully raked up. The addition of sand is unnecessary. You can also sow white mustard in warm places, which is left until spring. Its leaves and stems will be perfect mulch in winter, thanks to which the soil freezes more shallow and retains more water. When the soil warms up sufficiently and dries out in early spring, the terrain is leveling, so that the level difference does not exceed 0,5 cm. The surface must also be perfectly leveled, what is done in dry weather, when the soil is not too moist. On too wet soil, the desired lumpy structure is not obtained. After the surface is leveled, the soil should be compacted, e.g.. trampling it with plates attached to the legs. Dawson worked on this method of trampling. It is about this, that, starting from the edge, we move to the side, without taking your feet off the surface of the soil. When switching legs, the entire body weight is always transferred to one leg. After being trampled on, the level of the soil surface should not fall by more than 0 0,5 cm. Another way is to drag with a ladder, which is pulled over the entire surface with a rope, moving from front to back. The ladder can be weighted with bricks or stones. The more precise was the leveling of the surface with a rake, the easier it is to trample or tramp the soil.
The seeds are sown at the end of April. Before that, the entire surface is fertilized with a special lawn fertilizer mixture (150 g/m²), which is shallowly mixed with the soil with a rake. The seeds are sown in windless weather, preferably in the evening. After sowing, the soil surface should be rolled or slightly kneaded with boards. The period of germination and emergence of the grasses is about 3-4 weeks. The soil is not watered during this time. When the young grass reaches a height of 6-8 cm, it is mowed with a manual roller mower. The grass and soil should then be dry, but not overdry. After the first propagation of the grass, the second mowing takes place.
