Cement concrete pavements laid in place are of limited use due to their high cost, the need to maintain expansion gaps, which often violate the uniformity and smoothness of the surface and difficulties in repairing damage. For making small smooth surfaces such as bowling lanes, mini-golf courses, garden tables for tennis,, properly smoothed concrete is a very good material.
All varieties of pavements with bituminous binder have a much wider application than concrete pavements. This is because they enable uniform surfaces to be obtained, very smooth and more flexible. They are cheaper and the damage on their surface can be repaired much easier. These factors determined their wide and versatile application and use.
